Also, Mark, try book an award trip to Europe on United. You'll soon find out that that will set you back 110k miles standard miles. It always was 55k. Don't tell me you hadn't noticed these sneaky changes. By the way, I worked for United for years, so I know a thing or two about how they operate. And it ain't all that pretty.

Mark,

IF you want to fly United, using your United Miles, it always cost 55k miles round trip to Europe. Now, a standard United award cost 55k ONE WAY. That's slashing the values of miles in half, isn't it? Yet, "star alliance" awards are 55k round trip. I guess United doesn't want its own mileage holders fly using their miles, but occupy "free" seats at other carriers.

Stephan, I don't know what you're talking about re: paying 55,000 one-way. I booked roundtrip to Europe just last week using United miles, and it cost me 55,000. The Saver level awards and Star Alliance tickets are still 55,000 roundtrip.

It's not good at all! It cost 55k miles for a trip to Europe, roundtrip.
Now, it cost 55k miles ONE WAY.

How the fuck can that be good? The value of our miles has just been slashed in half. And without even so much as an email, a call or a letter. Quietly another kick in the balls.

Did you happen to notice that they actually reduced the number of miles required for an overseas upgrade? From 15K to 10K one way on full fares. For some of us, a very big plus.

Thanks for posting about the new UA awards. I'll have to keep that in mind when booking my next ticket, especially because I don't have enough miles right now for a full award ticket. I think on the balance it will be a good program, especially with the one way awards. It's too bad about the extra fees, though. They'll get you any way they can, right?
