This is ridiculous! Europeans on a whole love doing this and it is completely rude. Reserving a poolside chair? Come on. Most sane people only use a deck chair for an hour or two. If you need to reserve a chair or rush down during early morning hours you certainly have a VERY sad life. But obviously Europeans (especially Germans) are very arrogant or ignorant about their surrounds as thier usual vacant deck chair with their reserved towel sits thier while other people do not have a choice to lay anywhere. You guys in the northern hemisphere need to lean the word SHARE!

Never heard of this until I honeymooned in Greece with my British husband. According to him, the "towel wars" have been going on for years. Some tourists even leave them out overnight to save a spot.

Like nzm's partner, my husband has been known to take matters into his own hands...namely, throwing all of the towels into the pool as he's passing by "reserved" lounge chairs at 2am when returning from the bars. (Admittedly less classy than Andreas, but this was when he was a college student traveling abroad.)

I don't think hotels/cruise ships should allow all chairs to be reserved in advance, or no guest will be allowed to swim on a whim.

And riddle me this: how is it hotels can reserve you a poolside chair in advance, when many major airlines won't even reserve you a seat assignment?

I think it can be a tricky business. I could see a compromise in here, if they aren't already doing this. Also a certain amount of chairs can be reserved, so 40%-50% and the rest are first come, first serve and the hotel would not allow "towelling." I like what Bill said, "Here’s an idea. If your butt isn’t either in the pool or on the seat, you can’t hold it."

It is infuriating to see a number, if not all, of the chairs unused, but "taken." And not only at resort pools.

It is a good idea. The hoteliers, or other parties offering service in travel industry, shall take a pro-active way to treat tourists. Not saying that all tourists need the service. But it's a good thing that people can have the choice and enjoy better service if they want.

My partner is German and has a friend (also German) who used to go out to the pool a little after the towels were put down. Andreas would then collect all the towels, fold them, put them into a neat stack, then wait for all his pissed-off fellow countrymen to come down to the pool! There are some Germans who dislike the habits of their package holiday compatriots!

If you've ever been on a cruise and wanted to spend a little time sitting around the pool, only to find that all the chairs have been "toweled", you might see the attraction for this. On the other hand, the people who scrimped and saved all year just to be on the cruise got bumped by money yet again. Here's an idea. If your butt isn't either in the pool or on the seat, you can't hold it.

I love it! In a world where everyone has equal access, all you get are lines and required changes in behavior to adapt (think getting up early to get a pool lounge). I love the idea that you can buy access - it's the market at work! If it's important to you, you may be willing to pay for it (I think Disney should do this - charge and extra $50 or something per day and get front of line access).

I wish every airline would charge extra for exit row seats. I would pay every time! Sure, the frequent flier elites would bitch and moan, but c'mon, this is revenue to the bottom line! It's not like business fliers pay more these days for tickets, and are too greedy for miles to switch carriers just for an exit row (some would I suppose).

I like the idea.

I dislike German tourists.
