It’s Election Day in the U.S. of A., and I’ll be doing some get-out-the-vote civic service today, so keep the place clean while I’m gone.

If you’re an American citizen, eligible to vote, stop reading blogs and haul your butt to a polling station.

If not, or if you’ve already voted, please enjoy the video below as a reminder that 1) airplanes are really amazing pieces of machinery, and 2) flying in them isn’t always fun. The title: “Top Ten Crosswind and Scary Aircraft Landings.” Watch it and feel better about your last flight.

Note: For whatever reason, aviation video enthusiasts insist on adding extraneous and oftentimes cheesy soundtracks to their YouTube offerings. Unless you’re in the mood to hear the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” you may want to turn the volume down.

Watching a gut-wrenching set of videos is a “reward” ?

Note that at least one of these is from a test/practice flight, not a scheduled passenger flight. You blogged a similar video 2.5 years ago.

(The scariest one here — starting at 2:15, where the pilot manages to scrape a wingtip before going around — was definitely the subject of discussion here when it happened. I remember seeing the video at the time, but I can’t dredge up the blog post.)

Mark, I’m impressed by your memory, and your faithfulness as a reader. Thanks!!

The wingtip-scrape was mentioned in this post.

I guess I have a morbid fascination with crosswind landings. Mea culpa! :)
