The next time someone tells you about the benefits of airlines with open seating, hit them with polling data: Travelers prefer to pre-select their seats for air travel. But not all travelers are picky.

The poll of more than 10,000 respondents in 13 countries showed that two-thirds of travelers had a seating preference, with 41 percent saying a bad seat would ruin their flight.

Filipinos were the least fussy about their seats, while Thais were the most particular, according to the survey by global market research firm Synovate.

Cultural determinism aside, this here’s a surprise:

Sixty-three percent said they preferred window seats.

Interesting stat. I would have guessed “aisle,” especially if the survey sample seemingly included a good number of long-haul international travelers.

The drawback to seeing data like these: Airlines can use them against you. Look forward to being charged a premium for the window seats.

That window stat doesn’t surprise me. I prefer a window seat, even on a long-haul flight to Asia because it allows me to sleep better by leaning against the fuselage.

I agree with Adam. Also, with a window seat you won’t have someone asking you to get up each time they need the toilets… Quite important while sleeping!

  3. Call Center says:

Funny that “Filipinos were the least fussy about their seats”. Maybe their call-center folks have had enough of us calling and bothering them with *our* seating preferences!

  4. jean says:

I like the fact that I can choose my seat. Both window and aisle are ok with me depends on destinations.
