One thing they didn't mention in that letter, but it mentioned on their website, is that they've also eliminated all hot meals from all explus flights.

http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51501,00.html

So they've officially removed hot meals from 1st class on 2+ hour flights. Pitiful.

Yeah, I got this mail too from United. Funny. Clearly their Chief Customer Officer is a little out of his depth. Also flying last week and caught a funny conversation between two United pilots waiting to board and were completely ripping on that little red carpet for 1K members.

Hey...how about a quick insider update on what's going on with the United-Continental Star Alliance deal?

A few years back Delta sold food on longer flights, but the food was from a local Atlanta sandwich chain called Atlanta Bread Co. I preferred it over the normal meals, even if it meant I had to pay $6 for a sandwich. Why not get something that you will actually enjoy eating for a couple bucks instead of scarfing down some disgusting "made a week ago" meal for free?

Typical airline bungling. So they polled the consumers - I'm sure that feedback wasn't positive, decide to go ahead with the fees, then face a second wave of (this time) public backlash and retreat from the fees.
