Stayed in a Best Western in Iowa recently and I had a king bed room with river view (most expensive rate) but ice machine, vending machine and mini gym where across from my door in the hall, not exactly quiet at night I can tell you.

I'm a heavy sleeper but I still find some hotels unbelievably noisy. It doesn't seem to have much correlation to room rates either. One of the noisiest hotels I've ever been in was an otherwise very nice InterContinental Presidente in Mexico where virtually all of the floors were marble, both in the rooms and in all of the hallways. So you heard every footstep and every noise got amplified and echoed, from the neighboring room's TV to the guy closing a door at the other end of the hall. Who's the sadist idiot that came up with that design?

Couldn't agree with you more regarding
loud-closing hotel room doors. I would add ice machines and elevators to the list, as well.
