Jim, you're right, the 15K awards are not a permanent feature after all. When this post first appeared in May 2006, the short-hop award was described without an expiration date. Now, in April 2007, that award is gone. Thanks for pointing that out, and I'll look into the short lifespan of the short-hop award some more.

[...] Too many miles Me, I get tense when I have too many miles in my account. Not only do the miles not earn interest, but I have the creeping feeling that airlines will devalue them. So my first thoughts, when I read that someone has amassed 31 million Delta SkyMiles: “This guy must be nuts.” Or lazy. Or maybe he really has been trying to cash ‘em in, calling and calling, trying to get those first class tickets to LAX… Saving for an award may make sense, but hoarding is foolish. Spend faster! [...]

[...] Now Air Canada does one worse. As View From the Wing reports, the maximum life of an Aeroplan mile, even if you keep adding miles diligently to your account, will be limited to 7 years. On top of that, your account can be closed down if you don’t have activity for 12 months. As Gary Leff writes, that is indeed “draconian.” It makes United Airlines’ recently-effected reshuffling of the Mileage Plus program seem like an upgrade (which it isn’t, so don’t get any ideas).
